SVG (short for Scalable Vector Graphics) is a set of specifications for XML-based file formats used for two-dimensional graphics, both static and dynamic (i.e., animated or interactive). SVG specifications are an open standard, developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) since 1999.

Because SVG images are defined by XML text files, they can be searched, indexed, scripted, and even compressed. Like XML files, SVG images can be created with any text editor.

SVG images are supported at least to some extent by all major modern web browsers, including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer 9, Opera, and Safari.

SVG allows three types of graphical objects:

• vector graphics
• raster graphics
• text
